Portland Depression therapy

Being depressed can seem like an endless spiral into nothingness. Depression shouldn’t be ignored or treated as if it’s nothing important because even minor depression can take a turn for the worst and develop into severe depression. Treatment is absolutely essential, but all treatment methods do not work for everyone and it can take some time along with trial and error to find the best method to handle your depression.

Talk Therapy

One of the first things to look into is speaking to a psychologist about your problems. This allows your provider to get more information about your condition and develop an appropriate treatment plan. A therapist can help you figure out how to handle certain episodes, identify triggers and teach you ways to reduce stress. You’ll gain a larger understanding of how depression works and hopefully be able to deal with your symptoms better than before you seek out treatment.

Medications can help if talk therapy alone isn’t effective, but you must see a psychiatrist with the authority to prescribe medication. Medications can be used on their own, but are often used in addition to counseling to get the maximum benefit. With multiple medications available, it is very much a process of trial-and-error to determine what works for you and the correct dosage. It won’t happen immediately since your body needs time to adjust to the medicine. Your doctor will look at the following factors when deciding on a specific medicine and the dosage
• Other health conditions
• Interactions with other medications you may be taking
• Possible side effects that you may experience
• Your exact symptoms

Classes of Medications

There are three primary classes of medications used to manage depression. These include:
• SSRIs – Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors are usually the first line of treatment and do not have as many side effects as others.
• SNRIs – Serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors are a bit more powerful and have a larger impact on the body than SSRIs and can be prescribed if SSRIs are ineffective
• Tricyclic antidepressants – This is the strongest class of antidepressants and are used in more severe cases, but tend to have more side effects that some people might not be able to deal with

It’s also common for anxiety medication to be used in combination with antidepressants for maximum effectiveness.

Lifestyle and Alternative Methods of Treatment

Some lifestyle modifications can impact your depression and work alone or with therapy. Avoid taking drugs or alcohol because they may make you feel good at the time, but coming down the effect can worsen your symptoms. Eating healthy and exercising can improve your health overall. Exercise releases endorphins, which contribute to happiness. Getting enough sleep can also improve your health and overall wellness.

Depression is an inner demon that can try to destroy you from the inside out, but you don’t have to let it. Be open to trying new things and working with your therapist to develop the perfect treatment plan for your life.
